We typically have several high-speed cameras available in the laboratory, with schlieren imaging being one of the main applications. The light for schlieren images is provided by a mercury-arc lamp shown below. Schlieren images are captured using a Photron Fastcam SA1.1 high speed camera. This camera has a maximum frame rate of 675,000 fps. However, for flame speed experiments a frame rate between 3,000 and 20,000 fps is typically utilized. This frame rate is chosen based on the initial experimental conditions to allow for at least 100 frames to be available for analysis.
